    Existing group: Upgrade to SmartDL

I am evaluating SmartDL for my organization and had a couple questions. What, if any, changes are made to existing distribution and security groups when upgrading SmartDL groups?

Also, during setup there appeared to be an option for Schema files.  If that option is selected what additional changes are made, and what benefit do they provide.

    Cheers!

SmartDL stores the query information in the extensionData attribute of Active Directory.  That is the only change.  Even if you unistall SmartDlL, the query stays.  It is harmless information though.  You can use ldifde to clear the extensionData attribute of all groups after uninstalling if you want to keep the directory clean.

The schema files are for external directories (Lotus Notes, Sunone, etc.).  They are unecessary though as SmartDL autodetects the schema of these directories.  They are provided for users already familiar with the attributes names from previous versions of SmartDL.

Thanks for the response.  We had a similar plan in place for group management before coming across this product.  Do you know of any other applications(not necessarily group management apps) that also use that attribute to store data?  In the event i find other apps that need to use that attribute can SmartDL be configured to use an alternative attribute?

Other apps can use the attribute but I don't know of any.  Sometimes fax connectors use the attribute for users.  THis attribute is actually designed for third party use.  You can change the attribute in SmartDL but it is not recommended.  ExtensionData is really big and can hold a lot of data, more than any other canned (out of the box) attribute in AD.
